Tuesday's TPM Daily Dozen (January 1, 2013)

Happy New Year from Total Popular Music! It is official today: Bruno Mars' LOCKED OUT OF HEAVEN is the first TPM Number One song of 2013. Day-to-day airplay stats, though, show more holiday-related fluctuations, with the first six all losing total plays, while only three songs on Today's Twelve post gains. One of the gainers is fun.'s SOME NIGHTS, which has been in decline, but benefits from an end of year top hits boost. Meanwhile, starting today, for a few days, we are publishing two versions of the Daily Dozen -- with the second version based on our new methodology being adopted with the new year. (See the separate news release on the changes, and specifics of the new methodology.) ... The Top 12 Songs of the Day, every day, from TOTAL Popular Music - 'The NEW Mass Appeal Hit Music Radio Format!' - A service of Mark Harris Broadcast Consulting.

The new methodology being adopted for TPM Hit Music charts, as seen on this "preview" version of the Daily Dozen, uses "all stations" airplay data for our Hot Adult component, rather than the "published panel" totals which have been previously utilized. There is no change in the airplay data used for our CHR-Top40 component which continues to be "published panel" total plays.

'Total Popular Music' Revising Charts Methodology for the New Year

MHBC's "Total Popular Music" announces a new methodology for airplay data on its exclusive TPMusic Charts -- the weekly Super Sixty and the Daily Dozen -- for the new year. Beginning Jan. 1, the Daily Dozen listing will be presented in two versions -- one using the previous formula, and a second with the new methodology. MHBC's Mark Harris explains, "Since we converted to airplay-based rankings in July 2009, I have been concerned that our CHR-Top40 component over-dominates our overall TotalPlaysMonitored, because of its much larger airplay totals compared to the Hot Adult format's stats. For example, the current number one song at Top 40 radio, based on a published panel's airplay totals, shows 15,500+ total plays, while the Hot Adult (Hot AC/Adult Top 40) component's number one song has 4550+ total plays, also based on a published panel. The new methodology will use an 'all-stations monitored' airplay total for the Hot Adult component. Currently that component format's total airplay for the highest ranked song is about 1,000 plays greater than the total for the published panel. The change we are making will both better reflect the Hot Adult format from a wider sampling of airplay, and give that component an increased influence for our overall total airplay data used to rank songs on our original and exclusive charts. The CHR-Top40 component will still, though, be the dominant influence even with this change." Harris notes that this will create "major changes" in the overall Total Popular Music TotalPlaysMonitored listed on TPM charts, which is why a brief transition period, for the first three days of 2013, is being offered with the dual daily Top 12 listings. Starting January 4 only the new version of the Daily Dozen will be published. "The next weekly Super Sixty Airplay chart, January 6, will include an explanatory notice, and will utilize the new methodology data with 'last week' stats from an unpublished December 30 listing," says Harris. "Obviously, this will create some confusion with the variation from one week to the next, but I'm hopeful the brief transition period with the daily listings will help our readers and followers to adjust to the change. The end result, I believe, will be a better reflection of the 'new mass appeal hit music radio format' that Total Popular Music was created to be." The utilized airplay data for CHR-Top40 will continue to be from the published panel data.

Monday's TPM Daily Dozen (Dec. 31, 2012)

Last week the Christmas Grinch stole airplay from currently growing hits. This week, radio's playing the top songs of 2012. That helps some titles, but hurts others. It's going to be another week before airplay stats return to full normalcy for gains and losses ... Still a very strong Number One, Bruno Mars' LOCKED OUT OF HEAVEN adds to its total plays tally (up to 19,722), while runner-up HO HEY from The Lumineers stalls out, and LOCKED again has a lead of over 3,000 plays (3036). Just starting its fourth week at the top of our weekly Super Sixty, it appears a fifth week in the penthouse is in Bruno's future! (LOCKED will already be the first TPM Number One SuperHit of 2013 tomorrow!) ... Rihanna's DIAMONDS now definitely is trending a losing streak, as it's down 101 plays day-to-day. DIAMONDS, though, still has a substantial edge in the third position ... And current number four, Phillip Phillips' HOME also sees a minus (-34 plays from Sunday) ... Other still growing songs see stall outs or losses as Top 40 Radio steals some airplay time for hits from the year now ending. That includes P!nk's TRY, and even Taylor Swift's I KNEW YOU WERE TROUBLE. Meanwhile, Maroon 5's 2012 SuperHit ONE MORE NIGHT posts its smallest day-to-day loss (-12) since its declines began! ... While others stall or lose, Ed Sheeran's THE A TEAM has a modest but significant gain ... The Top 12 Songs of the Day, every day, from TOTAL Popular Music - 'The NEW Mass Appeal Hit Music Radio Format!' - A service of Mark Harris Broadcast Consulting.

Bruno Mars' LOCKED OUT OF HEAVEN starts a fourth week at Number One on the Super Sixty for the week of December 30, up to 19,686 TotalPlaysMonitored across the components of TotalPopularMusic, 2993 plays ahead of the runner-up, The Lumineers' HO HEY (16,693), which adds 519 plays after a holiday-interrupted chart week producing (for the most part) smalller week-to-week gains than usual ... Rounding out the first five of only 11 qualifying gainers are Alicia Keys' GIRL ON FIRE, +977, 21-18; THRIFT SHOP from Macklemore and Ryan Lewis with Wanz, +792, 34-31; and, SCREAM AND SHOUT from will.i.am and Britney Spears, +747, 24-19 ... The sixth greatest of the gainers -- Pitbull's DON'T STOP THE PARTY -- also enters the Top 20, 23-20, adding 717 plays ... Total Popular Music is the PPM-friendly 'NEW Mass Appeal Hit Music Radio Format' -- an exclusive service of Mark Harris Broadcast Consulting.

Sunday's TPM Daily Dozen (Dec. 30, 2012)

Setting the pace for the uppermost fifth of the new weekly Super Sixty (due online later today), our Sunday Daily Dozen confirms a fourth week at Number One for Bruno Mars' LOCKED OUT OF HEAVEN, which is still posting day-to-day gains in the "recovery mode" after losses for most of our songs resulting from alternate Christmas airplay. LOCKED finishes the just-concluded chart week 90 plays above its tally a week ago today ... Runner-up HO HEY from The Lumineers still has a good distance to go to challenge Bruno for the penthouse, but it continues narrowing the gap, today for the first time below 3,000 total plays (2993) ... Rihanna's DIAMONDS and Phillip Phillips' HOME both post day-to-day gains, but each is below its total plays tally a week ago today ... Continuing as strong gainers are P!nk's TRY and (even more so) Taylor Swift's I KNEW YOU WERE TROUBLE. Ms Swift's latest TPM SuperHit was the only song that didn't show a loss immediately after Christmas ... Ed Sheeran's THE A TEAM hits a new high for total plays, up 256 from last Sunday ... At the bottom, the three decliners realign slightly once again, as Ne-Yo's LET ME LOVE YOU (UNTIL YOU LEARN TO LOVE YOURSELF) slips below fun.'s SOME NIGHTS ... Saturday's TPM Hit Music Daily Dozen (Dec. 29, 2012)

With only one day until our new weekly charts are published, Bruno Mars' LOCKED OUT OF HEAVEN is all but guaranteed a fourth week at Number One on the Super Sixty -- starting the day today with a lead of 3030 total plays over runner-up HO HEY from The Lumineers. Both post gains of more than 100 plays today ... Rihanna's DIAMONDS again falters in the third position, losing 12 plays from yesterday ... Phillip Phillips' HOME, recently up 5-4, again shows a moderate gain ... Flo Rida's I CRY adds another 39 plays day-to-day, but that pales in comparison to a 139 gain for Taylor Swift's I KNEW YOU WERE TROUBLE. Taylor passes Flo Rida, with TROUBLE up 8-7 from Friday, 12-7 for the week to date. I CRY is down 7-8 day-to-day, but still up 10-8 for this week ... Ed Sheeran's THE A TEAM, up this week 11-9, adds 106 total plays from Friday, and now hits a new high tally after recovering from holiday programming related losses that affected almost all of the songs in the Dozen ... Friday's Daily Dozen (Dec 28, 2012)

After a day when every song but one posted holiday programming related losses, today every song that's still growing sees a gain. TPM Number One Bruno Mars' LOCKED OUT OF HEAVEN (re)gains 76 plays total, but is still below its previous high -- and its lead over The Lumineers' runner-up HO HEY again shrinks a bit, although it's still over 3,000 (enough for security in the penthouse for now) ... Rihanna's DIAMONDS, which may be on the verge of true declines, sees a slight day-to-day total plays gain ... Phillip Phillips' HOME, up yesterday 5-4 despite a loss, regains 34 plays today ... Also adding to their tallies are P!nk's TRY and Flo Rida's I CRY, but the Big Gainer remains Taylor Swift's I KNEW YOU WERE TROUBLE, up this week so far 12-8, and likely to pass I CRY tomorrow for an 8-7 rise ... A day after regaining positionally 12-11, today Ed Sheeran's THE A TEAM jumps 11-9 ahead of declining titles in the bottom three spots of Today's Twelve, the lowest ranked of which is now Ke$ha's DIE YOUNG ... Nevertheless, every song among today's Top 12 Songs of the Day is above 10,000 total plays across our components ... The Daily Dozen, every day, from TOTAL Popular Music - 'The NEW Mass Appeal Hit Music Radio Format!' - A Service of Mark Harris Broadcast Consulting.
